Youngsters are a class act for Warings

Pupils at Emsworth School were given a taste of life in the building industry with a hands-on activity day arranged by Portsmouth-based construction company Warings. The company behind the new Mary Rose Museum put together the day of construction-themed activities for the youngsters aged between 4 and 11. he activities included a structure and design challenge to build the tallest free-standing tower using balloons and tape and a session on safety to highlight the dangers of venturing on to construction sites unaccompanied. The older pupils learnt about measurement and mathematics in construction with an outdoor session to try some of the measurement devices used in the industry.

Warings’ Becky Hancock said: “I don’t think the youngsters thought construction could be quite so fun! The challenges really got the children in to the mindset of a construction worker.”Warings arranged the day as part of their involvement with the Havant branch of the  Children’s University national initiative. The programme encourages and promotes rewards for youngsters who attend out of school hours' activities for subjects linked to university courses such as construction, maths, building and many more.Pupils are rewarded for reaching certain targets. For 30 hours recorded, they get a bronze certificate, 65 hours, silver and for 100 hours a gold certificate. As each target is reached, the pupil 'graduates' at an award ceremony. These are held in a University, where the children wear gowns and mortar boards and receive their certificates in front of friends and families.
